MORTON captain Thomas O’Ware says there can be no repeat performance of Saturday’s loss to Queen of the South in their upcoming derby game.

The Ton head through to Paisley to take on league champions St Mirren in the last derby of the season after Saints clinched the title against Livingston at the weekend.

Morton meanwhile fell to a 1-0 defeat to Queens at Cappielow, which all but ended their chances of making the play-offs with two games remaining.

A win against the Doonhamers would have kept them in the running, but the skipper was disappointed with the lack of fight shown in a vital game.

And he knows his side need to put in a much-improved display against the Buddies.

He told the Tele: “We let ourselves down. It was a game we had to win and didn’t win. We only have ourselves to blame for that, and it’s us who need to take the responsibility for it.

“Going into the game we had more to play for and a win would have kept us in it, again we didn’t put in a performance we are capable of and what we should have done, and it’s all down to us.

“We need to go again. We’ve got a big derby game on Saturday. St Mirren have won the league and it’s a sell-out and I’ve got no intentions of heading there and getting beat.

“If we don’t go in with the right attitude then we know what’s going to happen.

“We have to be doing well at training this week and hopefully on Saturday we can play the way we can.”

Morton can take solace from the fact they’re the only team in the league St Mirren haven’t beaten this campaign, as they get ready to make their return to the Scottish Premiership.

The Cappielow side hold the edge in the derbies so far this season, winning one and drawing the other two games.

O’Ware added: “We’ve done well in the derbies this year and it’s another game where we can try and put things right before the end of the season and go out on a high.

“The boys certainly don’t want to go to their home ground, in front of their sell-out crowd and get beaten, there’s a lot to play for.

“They’ll be wanting to get a win especially because it’s against us and they haven’t beaten us. But equally we want to go down there and prove that we’ve had a season without being beat by the team that’s deserved to win the league.

“Folk might say we’ve got nothing to play for but that’s not the case.

“It’s a derby at the end of the day and you don’t want to be beaten in them.”
