MIDFIELDER Andy Murdoch admits it’s been a ‘frustrating’ season for Morton.

After having their play-off fate in their own hands last month, they now face the prospect of finishing sixth or seventh in the table.

The Greenock side can seal sixth place with a win against Inverness Caley Thistle today, and would finish above Queen of the South, who travel to Glebe Park to play Brechin City.

But former Rangers youth product Murdoch says they’ve not been clinical enough in front of goal, with midfielder Gary Harkins the Ton’s top scorer on eight, four of those coming via penalties.

That, coupled with letting in poor goals and too many draws has cost Morton this year according to the 23-year-old.

He told the Tele: “We didn’t score enough and we conceded poor goals at the back. It’s been a frustrating season more than anything.

“We lost points and drew at home when we should have won. We should have turned more of our draws into wins.”

Since winning the Challenge Cup against Dumbarton last month, Inverness have been in scintillating form.

They have won seven of their last nine games, drawing the other two, with their last loss coming against Dunfermline back on March 13.

But Morton should take comfort that their form this year against the in-form Caley Jags has been good.

Jim Duffy’s side remain unbeaten against the Highland outfit, picking up two wins and a draw so far against John Robertson’s team.

The midfielder said: “We’ve done quite well against them in the last few games we’ve played against them, so hopefully we can do the same again today.”

Murdoch has featured 41 times this season for the Ton, the second most after right-back Michael Doyle.

He’s been an integral part of the Ton midfield, and while he’s enjoyed it, he was annoyed after his side had a chance to replicate last season’s play-off finish.

He added: “I’ve enjoyed the season, but we’ve been inconsistent in matches.

“We do well in games. We have a spell and then we have bad spells, and we’ve had times where we’ve played well or not well in halves.

“It’s just been a bit inconsistent. We know we could have done better.”

While Morton made the play-offs last year, their form tailed off dramatically at the end, with their points total in the first three quarters of the season enough to seal a top four spot.

The Greenock side failed to pick up a win in their last nine games of the 2016-17 season, before losing twice to Dundee United in the Premiership play-offs.

This year there have been similarities to last season. After a strong start to the year they have picked up only two wins in their last 10 games, both victories coming against the bottom two part-time sides Dumbarton and winless Brechin City.

But Murdoch says their League Cup run last year, which saw Morton make the semi-finals, played a part in their end of season form , with fatigue kicking in towards the end of the campaign.

And the midfielder was blunt in his assessment of where it’s gone wrong for them this year.

He said: “Last year it was everyone getting a bit tired. This year we should have just done better in most games.”
