MORTON star Peter Weatherson says he can"t wait to start the new season - despite a tough opening month for the Cappielow club.
The 29-year-old was desperate to find out who Ton would meet in their first game of the campaign.
And after finding out league favourites Dundee will be their opponents, he vowed his teammates have what it takes to cause an upset.
Weatherson, who scored a double in last term"s 2-0 victory over the Dee, said: 'It"s going to be a very tough league next year, so whoever we got it was going to be a hard match.
'August has some really attractive fixtures in it for us and I really believe we can go to Dens Park and get something in the opener.
'Dundee have spent a lot of money this year and are being tipped as favourites for the title - but our target is to win the division ourselves.
'There"s no point in starting out and not having winning the league as what you are aiming for.
'It"s a cliche but we"ll just have to take each game as it comes and repeat the success we had in the second half of last season.
'The next game after that is at home against Dunfermline and that is one we really want to win.
'It took us too long last year to get our first three points, so this time we"ll be using our good record against them to give us the confidence to win.
'Hopefully all the fans will turn out in force to support us and we can repay them with a good result.
'I"m also looking forward to going down to Ayr. I"ve scored a few goals there so I"ll be looking to add to that.
'We don"t know much about them but Brian Reid has built a side which took Kilmarnock to a replay in the Scottish Cup and relegated Airdrie.
'That alone shows they"ll be difficult to beat but I"m sure we will do our homework on them before the game.'
Weatherson and the rest of the Morton squad return to training this Monday in preparation for some big games before the league begins.
Most notably, Morton take on rivals St Mirren in this year"s Renfrewshire Cup Final at New St Mirren Park, on Tuesday 28 July.
And Weatherson reckons the match will be even more special at the new Greenhill Road ground.
He said: 'I"ve been at the club for many years now and these games are always special.
'I"m really excited about playing at the new premier league stadium in front of a big crowd.
'It will be a great atmosphere and we"re desperate to get the better of our rivals as it"s been too long since we last picked up the trophy.'
