Morton's captain has urged chairman Douglas Rae to keep his promise and end the niggling uncertainty in the squad by appointing a new manager on a permanent basis before Saturday's trip to Inverness.

Speaking before the news broke of the failed bid to land Stirling's Allan Moore as manager, Greacen insisted the news, whether it be James Grady and Allan McManus on a permanent basis or a new manager, would boost fans and players alike ahead of the long trip to face Caley Thistle.

He said: "It does need sorted out now - it's a must.

"It's been five, going into six weeks and some stability is needed.

"I know the chairman doesn't want to rush his decision but it is dragging on now and a permanent appointment would give the players and fans a massive boost.

"It must have been hard for Allan and James to deal with all the speculation and to go from being one of the boys in the dressing room to being in charge - but they have been a credit to themselves.

"The players have backed them and we just want this issue done and dusted so we can all get back to concentrating just on the football alone and getting the results we need, starting on Saturday." "It's hard for James and Allan to put their own structures in place when they only have the job on a caretaker basis.

"And that includes getting players in, because, as everyone can see now, we really need to get some bodies in." Greacen confirmed that there are no new injury worries to add to the long list.

He said: "That's the first time we have had a training session without anyone getting a knock for a while." "Obviously big Brian [Graham] is out now as well to add to the list.

"And they're not niggles either, most of them are at least a month-to-six-week injuries.

"There is a lot of good players we are not able to call upon.

"Not having many fit bodies doesn't really affect training, but it does affect things big time on a Saturday afternoon.

"The managers will have to assess things again on Friday, but most of the injuries look fairly long term, so it doesn't look that good at the moment.

"We'll just have to see who's available. We are missing a lot of very capable players.

"We will have enough for a starting 11 - but we could be short of numbers on the bench." Inverness, one of the pre-season favourites for the title, are on a dreadful run of form at home, something Ton will be looking to exploit by getting the exasperated home fans on their own players' backs early on.

"They are on a very bad run at home. Hhowever, they also have some talented players, as their result from the weekend shows." Caley thrashed Ayr United 5-1 at Somerset Park on Saturday.

Morton could have leapfrogged Dunfermline on Saturday but are now five-points adrift in eighth place, a situation that Greacen admits is a concern, even at this stage of the season.

He said: "We have to get back up there and start climbing the league.

"We have got the quality to do it. We have to concentrate on getting back to mid-table at least and then take it from there.

"Even though it's early in the season we don't want a gap to start developing.

"We have got the quality to start putting a few back-to-back wins together, which is all it takes to start climbing the league."
