MORTON striker Brian Wake has left the club by mutual consent and will join Conference Blue Square Premier League club Gateshead.
The player, who was signed by former Morton boss Jim McInally just a fortnight before his resignation on 12 February 2008, failed to gain a regular spot in the side despite a decent strike rate in terms of goals per game.
He told the Telegraph: "I really enjoyed my time at Morton. I have met a lot of good people and had some good times.
"It's always sad when you leave a club, but these things happen in football."
With Wake signed until the end of the season, player and club reached a mutual agreement to part company now.
"I've been five or six years in Scotland now," continued Englishman Wake, "and Gateshead is just 40 minutes away from where I come from.
"I've signed to the end of the season with them and hope I can impress and get something sorted out."
On his time with Morton, Wake said: "It would have been nice to get a good run in the team to see if I could nail down a regular place.
"It seemed that I would get a few games and then be out again, but that happens in football. There were good players at Morton and we were battling for places."
Wake scored 12 goals last season and has two braces to his credit this term. He also scored key goals in his first season as Morton battled against relegation. Ton boss James Grady said: "Brian goes with our best wishes. He has been nothing but a model pro."
The Morton manager is looking for a different type of striker - 'a more over-the-top player' as he put it, and he continued: "It's a testament to Brian and the club that we've worked this out
quickly. We allowed him to talk to Gateshead. It's part and parcel of football.
"Wakey was a bit of a cult hero with the fans, what with his looks and important goals to save us from relegation. But the club can't stand still."
Grady is still hoping he can fix up Finnish striker Jonatan Johansson, but he is looking for a quick answer and said yesterday afternoon: "We are pushing Jonatan for an answer now. We want him here but have to look after ourselves."
