NEW PAIRING? Morton are looking at trialist Donovan Simmonds, as a possible new striking partner for Peter Weatherson, pictured.

Morton have arranged a closed door game at Cappielow today against St Johnstone in order to have another look at former Coventry striker Donovan Simmonds.

The 21-year-old, who had a spell with Kilmarnock on loan, has played twice for Morton, scoring an excellent goal in a bounce game against Hamilton last week, won 4-1 by the Greenock club.

Ton boss James Grady said: "He's been recommended to us. We are basically having another look at him and we'll see where that takes us.

"He's got pace to burn and that's something we lack. Against Hamilton he gave the defender five yards and went past him with another five to spare before scoring.

"He was in Malta before coming to train with us. We have wanted to see him over a longer period."

Grady also confirmed that Morton are looking at one other player who may get a game today against Saints.

He said: "I don't know whether or not we'll be able to get him to play against St Johnstone."

Grady and his assistant Allan McManus have always said that they won't bring players to Cappielow simply to make up the numbers.

Simmonds was a highly promising player in his teenage years, but the Ton duo clearly want to make sure that he can improve the team in the long run and be a worthwhile acquisition.
