BETTER NEWS: Ton defender Dom Shimmin managed to train yesterday and is expected to make the side for tomorrow.

Ton boss's warning as his team head to Dumfries

ONLY if they show the same desire and commitment that has characterised their performances in recent seasons at Palmerston, will Morton continue that six-match unbeaten run.

Ton boss James Grady was at pains to point that out as his team prepare for the trip to Dumfries.

He said: "Records are there to be broken. The boys can take heart from their performances in Dumfries, but there's no hoodoo about it. They've only done well there because every time they have been up for it.

"If we're to get a result tomorrow they will need to be at their top levels. Queens have a good record at Cappielow and I know I want to change that the next time they come to Greenock. Gordon Chisholm {Queens' manager] will be the same tomorrow. He'll be impressing that on his players."

It doesn't look likely that Morton will have the new striker they are seeking in place in time for tomorrow, and Grady said: "As we have said, we won't bring in anyone unless they're better than what we've got."

Grady confirmed that, unless another club makes a last-minute decision, Morton will go into the game with their current squad, meaning Peter Weatherson plus one other up front.

It could be that Brian Graham, who scored at Palmerston in October, will get the nod ahead of Iain Russell.

Erik Paartalu is ruled out of consideration after failing to recover from an ankle problem.

But there is better news concerning Dom Shimmin, who trained yesterday after missing out during the week due to a groin strain, while skipper Stewart Greacen also took part in Thursday's session.

Grady said: "We've still not got to the bottom of Stewart's illness, but he has trained and we are hoping there is no reaction."

Meanwhile, new signing Kevin McKinlay can play tomorrow. It was earlier thought he may be suspended, but a two-match ban does not kick in until Monday.
