Ton assistant Mark McNally told the Tele the club were in discussions with the former Kilmarnock and Hamilton midfielder about a move.
And although Skelton, 30, above, is yet to make his mind up, McNally would be delighted if he signed.
He said: "Gavin joined us at training yesterday, and that gives us a wee chance to get to know him. He can have a look around and get to know the set-up here.
"It's a situation that suits both parties. I believe we are one of the first teams back, so it gives him the facilities to do some training while allowing us the opportunity to entice him to join us.
"I do know he certainly has concrete offers from teams down south, but he hasn't made up his mind yet.
"His situation is one we will continue to assess and we will know more by the beginning of next week."
