MARK McLaughlin has revealed he turned down the offer to remain at Hamilton to become Morton's first new signing of the summer.

The veteran defender spent eight seasons at New Douglas Park but jumped at the chance to join up at his local club, having grown up in nearby Port Glasgow.

And McLaughlin, 36, admits he is already desperate to get his Cappielow career underway after hearing boss Allan Moore's plans for the club.

McLaughlin, below with the manager, said: "It's something I'm looking forward to already, I am very excited about next season. It is going to be a new challenge for me.

"I've spoken to the gaffer about next season already and he has told me about some of the guys he wants to bring in over the summer.

"I think if we can bring in some of them, and keep a few of the guys who were here this season, then the team will go from strength to strength.

"I had been eight years at Hamilton and I had something on the table from them. But I just felt a fresh start would do me the world of good."
