McNeil's double secures points for Morton reserves
Published: 10 Sep 2013 12:00
SUPER sub David McNeil came off the bench to score a double and fire the Morton reserves to a 3-1 league win over Stenhousemuir at Cappielow last night.
Archie Campbell gave David Hopkin’s men the lead on 19 minutes when he slammed home inside the box after Craig Knight had headed back into the danger area.
But the visitors equalised within 40 seconds through Andrew Thomson, who stuck out a leg to stab a Ciaran Summers drilled cross high into the top-right corner. Stephen Stirling, making only his second appearance since recovering from a leg break, was showing up well in midfield and struck the face of the crossbar with an effort from the edge of the box. At the other end, Derek Gaston had to look sharp to make a couple of smart stops to deny lively Stenny frontman Errol Douglas.
Forwards McNeil and Jordan Cairnie were sent on to replace Campbell and Kabba-Modou Cham on 68 minutes, and the introduction of McNeil in particular proved pivotal.
Within six minutes the 18-year-old had won a penalty when he was scythed down by Charles Docherty after a sharp turn inside the box.
McNeil grabbed the ball and placed a firm penalty past the despairing dive of goalkeeper Dean Shaw.
And he completed his brace in the first minute of injury time, racing onto a Cameron O’Neil through ball before nonchalantly clipping over the advancing Shaw.
Morton (4-1-3-2): Gaston (7); Knight (7), Jamieson (6), Peciar (6), Russell (7); Verlaque (6); Stirling (7) (Lamont 77, 3), O’Neil (7), Fulton (5); Cham (6) (McNeil 68, 8), Campbell (6) (Cairnie 68, 5).
