On-fire McNeil’s 2 good
Published: 22 Oct 2013 12:00
David Hopkin’s development squad, supplemented by eight Under-17 players, three of whom started, ran out comfortable victors against a physical Highland
League under-20 side on Sunday.
Captain McNeil opened the scoring on 39 minutes, firing a penalty down the middle after Jordan Cairnie was sent tumbling by a clumsy Daniel Cowie trip.
Following his four-goal salvo against Berwick reserves, Aidan Ferris looked in confident mood but was twice thwarted by fine goalkeeping from visiting keeper Marco Del Testa.
In the end, it was strike partner McNeil, pictured, who secured Ton’s spot in next round when he added a spectacular second five minutes from full-time.
The 18-year-old raced after David Verlaque’s raking diagonal pass in behind the Broch defence before breezing in from the left.
After skipping past a second challenge, he smashed a ferocious right-foot strike off the underside of the bar, down and back up into the roof of the net to seal a hard-fought victory.
Morton (4-1-2-1-2): McIntyre (6); Knight (6), Mitchell (7), Tennant (8), Russell (7); Verlaque (7); Lamont (6), Cairnie (6); O’Neil (6) (Stevenson 73, 4); Ferris (7) (Orr 77, 3), McNeil (8) (Tiffoney 90+2, 1).
Subs not used: Robertson, McEwan.
Booked: Ferris (30).
