AS the season draws to a close, Tele columnist Chris Millar picks his players and team of the year.

IT is that time of the season again and the PFA Player of the Year nomination forms have been sent out to all the clubs across Scotland.

As a player it is your chance to give your opinion on which fellow professionals have been the standout players of the season, outwith your own club.

Many players have been tweeting their selections and I thought it would be an opportunity to share my take on the top performers in Scotland this season.

You have to base your vote on the performance of individuals in the games you have played against, so for that reason each players’ vote is very subjective.

One player’s experience and point of view can be totally different from another. So, here are my player, young player and team of the year.

Player of the year: There is only one winner of this award in my eyes and it has to be KRIS COMMONS. Not only has he been Celtic’s top scorer, a feat achieved from an advanced midfield role, but he has been their top performer. He is a nightmare to play against. He is so elusive on the park and takes up positions in between defence and midfield.

As a midfielder you have to have eyes in the back of your head. Defenders are wary of coming in to pick him up as it exposes space in behind them for strikers to exploit. He is such an intelligent player. He knows how to manipulate the ball and his body when in possession, making it so difficult to dispossess him. He has great vision and can spot a pass. He is strong when needed to be but also clever enough that when he feels contact, goes down to win free kicks in dangerous areas.

Added to all that, and what sets him apart, he has a predatory eye for goal and can score off either foot. He is simply the best player in Scotland at the moment.

Young player of the year: I have to mention our own striker Stevie May here as he has had a fantastic year and scored so many important goals for St Johnstone. He would have been my vote but as the rules state voting for your own players is not allowed. So for that reason I will go with Dundee United’s RYAN GAULD. He has great balance, poise and technical ability for someone so young. He has been hailed as the ‘Scottish Messi’ and when you see his style of play and the way he dribbles with the ball the similarities are not wide of the mark. He can already hold his own in the SPFL and in the coming years he is only going to go from strength to strength. He has a massive future ahead of him in the game.

My Team of the Year: Goalkeeper — FRASER FORSTER.

The all-time minutes without conceding a goal record holder in Scotland says it all really. He is a commanding presence, good with the ball at his feet and a great shot stopper.

Right Back — ADAM MATTHEWS I have been a fan since he joined Celtic. He has great pace, very comfortable on the ball and an unbelievable engine. He is also a very accomplished defender and ticks all the boxes at right back.

Centre half — VIRGIL VAN DIJK He is a contender for player of the year and a classy defender. Technically excellent and cruises through league games with his pace and power. Also pops up with his fair share of goals from free kicks and set pieces.

Centre Half — MARK REYNOLDS We have yet to score against Aberdeen this season and a big reason for that is down to this man. His pace and recovery when defending is top drawer. He is comfortable on the ball and although not the tallest is good in the air. He has all the attributes I look for in a defender.

Left back — ANDY ROBERTSON He is another young man at Dundee United with a big future ahead of him. He raids up and down the left hand side all day, has fantastic delivery and has contributed with a few goals this season also. Fit and pacey, as modern fullbacks need to be.

Midfield – WILLO FLOOD He sits in front of the back four at Aberdeen and does the dog work, allowing the forward thinking players to go and play. Always available to take the ball and I love his feisty, winner’s attitude on the park; a real player’s player.

Midfield — PETER PAWLETT Speed kills and Pete is a flying machine. Very direct and given a more central role under Derek McInnes. That has seen his game come on leaps and bounds this season. Has been a standout at Aberdeen this season and a major factor in the club’s resurgence.

Midfield — KRIS COMMONS Debated about putting him in up top, but this is where his best position is, at the point in the midfield.

Forward — KRIS BOYD Boydy is a goal machine and this season is the best shape I have seen him in physically as well. Looks really settled at Kilmarnock and they will do well to keep him at Rugby Park next season. Scores all types of goals with his head, left foot and right foot both inside and outside the box.

Forward — NADIR CIFTCI At times he can frustrate and is unpredictable but at the same time that factor can also make him do something to light up and win a game. Fantastic skill allied to a strong, pacey physical presence makes him a tough opponent to play against. Has scored a lot of important goals at Dundee United this season.

Forward — BILLY MCKAY Inverness’s standout player and always a goal threat. Links the play really well with his back to goal and also makes great runs in behind defences. Has continued on his goalscoring exploits of last season this year and is a real goal-getter.
