DOUGIE Imrie has apologised to Morton fans for the dreadful season which has seen them relegated from the Championship.

The Ton will now compete in the third tier of Scottish football for the first time in seven years, going back to when they lifted the 2006/07 Second Division title.

Skipper Imrie is one of a select group who have seen out the full season, making 36 starts in all competitions under Allan Moore and his replacement Kenny Shiels.

And the 30-year-old said sorry to the club’s supporters for a year of underachievement in the Championship.

He told the Tele: “Saturday was a horrible day for everyone connected with Morton Football Club.

“It’s never nice to be relegated.

“I don’t know how to describe how we’ve been so poor this season. To be fair we’ve been unlucky with some results.

“We’ve been unlucky with some decisions going against us and things like that, where we could have possibly picked up valuable points but it’s gone against us.

“But we’ve disappointed the fans for most of the season. “We know ourselves we have let them down and we’ve let ourselves down.

“The fans have been brilliant all season, you know.

“They backed us all the way through and they’ll say themselves it’s not been a good year.

“But they really have backed us all season and hopefully we can give them something back in our remaining games.

“I take my hat off to them.

“They’ve been there every game, home and away, the diehards, and from my own perspective, I would like to thank them for the way they’ve supported us.

“Like I say, we’ve been disappointing. We know that and we apologise as a team and a group that we’ve not been up to the standard we showed against Dumbarton recently for the whole season.

“As I said after I came in after that game: how could we not play like that before now?

“If we played like that for half a season we wouldn’t have been where we are.”
