AIDAN Fulton is itching to return to pre-season training with Morton today and show new manager Jim Duffy what he is capable of.

Winger Fulton and striker David McNeil were both deemed too old to continue with David Hopkin’s development squad when their contracts expired in May.

It looked as though they would be offered deals with the first-team until Kenny Shiels resigned, leaving the pair unsure where they stood and wondering if their time with the Ton was up.

However, new boss Duffy offered them an opportunity to return for pre-season training and prove they were worth a spot in his squad — and Fulton is intent on making the grade.

The 20-year-old told the Tele: “I spoke with Jim Duffy and he has invited us into pre-season to have a look at us.

“He didn’t think we played enough games last year.

“You can understand where he’s coming from: you’re not just going to sign a boy who’s not played much.

“I’ve had a couple of other offers from clubs who have also asked me to go in for pre-season with them.

“I’ll start pre-season with Morton but I’ll also keep my options open elsewhere because I can’t afford to put all my eggs in one basket.

“Obviously I want to stay at Morton because they’re my local team. It’s close to home and I already know a lot of the boys there.

“Last year was just a disaster of a season and I want to have a good time with Morton.

“I don’t feel as if I had that.

“I feel that I’m capable of doing a job next season and I think I just need a chance to show that by getting a run of games.

“Obviously it wasn’t really a possibility last year with the team fighting a relegation battle.

“If the team was sitting mid-table, you can give younger boys a run of games.

“So it was hard.

“Most of the games I was coming on for 10 or 15 minutes and it’s difficult to try and get into a game in a limited amount of time.” He added: “I booked a holiday before I knew what was happening and it turned out it went three days over into pre-season, so I paid money to get my flights changed to make sure I could make training.

“I’m happy that the new manager has offered me that chance to come in and I definitely think big Dave [McNeil] and I can make an impact on the team next year. I’m ready to go.”
