NEW Cappielow recruit Jordan Allan has credited coaching from Gordon Dalziel and Billy Davies for helping him win his move to Morton.

Following his recent release by Dundee United, Allan was presented with opportunities to sign for other Scottish Premiership sides with a view to playing for their Under-20s teams.

But he was determined to find a club at which he would gain first-team experience, and elected to put himself in the shop window by signing up for Dalziel’s Revolution Sports Management camp.

The former Rangers and Raith Rovers striker turned radio pundit runs pre-season training sessions designed to help unattached players get back in the game.

It was there that Allan caught Ton boss Jim Duffy’s eye and earned an ultimately successful trial period at Parklea.

And the 19-year-old says he would recommend that route to any young player who finds himself on the soccer scrapheap.

He told the Tele: “At the end of the season I went to a training camp with Gordon Dalziel and Billy Davies — and I can’t thank them more.

“They did a lot for me and it really helped. They put me in contact with people in the game I never knew and that opened a few doors.

“I actually phoned one of my old team-mates at Dundee United, Ross Gilmour, to see if he wanted to go to the gym but he said he couldn’t because he had training.

“I was about to congratulate him for getting a team but he then told me it was a training camp and that I should come down. That’s how it came about.

“There were boys from the Glasgow area who’d been released from the likes of Aberdeen, Motherwell, Hamilton and Dundee United, as well as signed players who were just looking to get their fitness up ahead of pre-season.

“I’m good friends with Barrie McKay, who was on loan at Morton from Rangers last year, and he was there.

“The training was great. It involved fitness work, running and stretching, and coaching from Billy Davies. That was a great experience because he’s a top coach and knows what he’s talking about.

“We were also involved in a game. The camp was in East Kilbride and we played against the local junior team. “I played left-back, scored a header from a corner and had a really good game.

“That’s when the gaffer saw me and told me that night he would like me to come in on trial with Morton the next day.

“So I owe Gordon and Billy so much. If it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t be here at Morton now. I’d maybe be in training at a part-time side.

“It does cost money but it’s more than worth it.

“It’s the best money I’ve ever spent as it was brilliant for me and I couldn’t recommend it more.

“I’d say to any player in the area, if they can get to these camps then it will definitely be worth it because they can help you a lot.” Allan has signed an initial six-month contract with the Ton and is channelling all of his energies into make the most of the break Duffy has given him.

He added: “My contract with Dundee United was up and they didn’t renew it.

“I’d come through the youth system there but only played one first-team match in a bounce game against Aberdeen.

“I had interest from Premiership clubs this summer. But I didn’t want to play another year at under-20s and not get any first-team experience.

“By signing for Morton in League One I could maybe get 20 or 25 games over the course of the season. This is a fantastic opportunity.”
