PORT Glasgow remain top of their Sectional League Cup table after another good performance at Johnstone last night.
Technically they were the ‘home’ side, but once again they adapted well to the surroundings of the Burgh’s Keanie Park, and were well worthy of their win.
After some near things for striker Scott Nugent early on, the Port took the lead on 25 minutes.
A Gus Gault corner fell to Eddie Walton, whose volley was parried by the Burgh keeper but fell to Graham Black, who slotted home from close range.
Johnstone had the better of the opening 10 minutes of the second half, with Port keeper Bryan Tucker called into action, but thereafter it was pretty much one-way traffic towards the Burgh goal.
The Burgh keeper again denied Nugent, Black then volleyed wide, and the keeper pulled off an excellent double save from Jo-Jo Connolly and the rebound from Alan Jamieson.
But the home stopper blotted his copybook on 75 minutes, when he misjudged an over-hit high cross from Connolly and allowed the ball to sail over his head and into the net. And the icing on the cake came as the match entered stoppage time, when Ross Kearns and Black combined well for the latter to blast home via the underside of the bar.
Port manager Craig Brown said: “Obviously, I was pleased with our performance, as we played some really good stuff. We were solid defensively, and created a lot of chances up front.” PORT GLASGOW: Tucker, Grana, Coyle, Walton, McClement, Gault (Kearns 60), McKay, Connolly, Nugent (Sharp 75), Black, Jamieson (McCormick 78). Subs not used: Ellis, Graham.
