THRILLED Morton boss Jim Duffy believes his players achieved a feat that is unlikely to be equalled often in League One this term by travelling up to Peterhead and leaving with all three points.

Jim McInally’s side lost just one league match at Balmoor in the whole of last season as they claimed the League Two championship at a canter.

Morton, meanwhile, had lost in seven of their 10 visits to Peterhead since the Blue Toon joined the football league for the 2000-01 campaign. But Thomas O’Ware’s dramatic stoppage-time goal secured a 2-1 victory, one that Duffy admitted felt both sweet and significant at the same time.

He told the Tele: “I don’t think we were brilliant, but we certainly showed a real determination and desire to try and get the win. The performance levels don’t really matter. It’s about winning, particularly getting points on the board early in the season.

“Peterhead are a very, very good side. This is a very difficult place to come and win no matter if it’s early in the season, in the middle of the season, or late in the season.

“There won’t be many teams who come up here and go away with three points and we’re delighted that we’ve done it.

“Rory [McAllister] being sent off meant that Peterhead settled and tried to hold on for the draw, which was understandable, whereas they had kept two men up front prior to that.

“From our point of view, we thought we had nothing to lose and kept players up the pitch. If it had been 11 versus 11 we might have kept it tight and take a point.

“The fact they were down to 10 allowed us to gamble, and when you do that you sometimes get a break. We managed to get that break.

“I’ve lost late goals up here in the past and we lost an injury-time goal in midweek, in the 94th minute, to take us to extra-time, so the roles were reversed today.

“It’s important to enjoy this. You don’t get too many injury-time wins, so to get that late goal was sweet and makes the journey home a little bit more pleasant. It’s a terrific result for us.” Duffy also had special words of praise for makeshift striker O’Ware, who now has two goals in two games playing up top.

He added: “I was delighted for Thomas O’Ware. He’s been thrown up there since the start of the season pretty much, and he’s continued to improve. Him and Declan [McManus] have looked a decent partnership. He scored in midweek with a header and then again today with a chance that wasn’t easy.

“He had the composure to let it run through him and keep it down instead of lashing at it with it being so late on.

“Thomas is a player who is adaptable and who can play in a number of positions. We’ve asked him to go and lead the line for us, which is a very difficult role to take on. There are players who play in that position for many, many years who find it a struggle, so all credit to him for managing it after just a few weeks. I’m delighted for him.”
