DEREK Gaston has revealed his team-mates reassured him he did not blunder at Ayr United’s winning goal at the weekend.

The Morton No1 blocked after Ryan Donnelly had attacked Michael Donald’s low cross and the loose ball broke for Scott McLaughlin to slam high into the net.

Gaston has admitted he wasn’t sure if he was at fault and should’ve claimed the ball before Donnelly got there, but said Ton colleagues set his mind at rest afterwards.

He told the Tele: “The ball came in and I went down to get it and I’ve not seen Donnelly coming across.

“It was at the last minute I saw him and spread myself to make the block.

“He’s kicked it off me and obviously it’s fallen to the boy [McLaughlin] who has run in to score.

“He [Donnelly] actually got there before me. I’ve not had a hold of the ball at all at any point, but I’d need to look at it again to see if I could have got on it before him.

“It happens so quickly that you’re not sure if you’re in the right position to start with or whether you’ve been slow to react.

“When I came off at half-time I asked Davie [Wylie] about it at and he said he thought it was a good save.

“I asked one of our younger goalkeepers, Jamie McGowan, how it looked and he said that from in the stand it looked like a good save and that it was unlucky it fell to their player.

“Andy Barrowman said his initial reaction was the same. I wasn’t sure myself at the time but I think [after hearing what they’ve said] it’s maybe just a good cross into a dangerous area that’s hard to defend.”
