JON Scullion says there was no way he was letting team-mate Robbie Crawford rob him of his first Morton goal.

The 19-year-old, who has scored seven times in eight appearances for the Under-20s this term, was handed his first top-team start in Saturday’s 2-0 win over league leaders Forfar.

Former St Mirren kid Scullion rewarded his manager by opening the scoring with a left-footed strike after 15 minutes.

The ball appeared to take a deflection on its way into the net, with Rangers loanee Crawford claiming the touch — but Scullion insisted the ball flicked off a defender.

He said: “It was brilliant to start my first match, a great experience for me and I loved every minute of it.

“I got a good reception when I came off and that was pleasing obviously, with it being my first start and thinking about it last night [Friday]. The fans were brilliant.

“I had a few shots at goal and fortunately one of them went in. With my goal, the ball broke to me on the edge of the box and I came inside, hit it and it’s taken a slight nick.

“Robbie [Crawford] tried to claim the goal off me. He said it touched him but I think it touched the defender. But he can’t do that to me on my debut! I’ve told him it’s my goal. It was a great win today. The lads were brilliant. The spirit in the changing room here at Morton is excellent.” Scullion signed a six-month contract with the Ton in July following his Saints departure and says he is loving life at Cappielow. He added: “I was released by St Mirren in the summer. I’d been with them my whole pro-youth career and I think my time there had just come to an end really.

“I don’t think it was anything to do with my height, no. It’s just about opinions and football is full of them.

“David Hopkin phoned me right away and seemed really interested. He’s been brilliant with me since I came here and he’s really helped me with the reserves.”
