AFTER Saturday’s display at Cappielow I have a few questions to ask about the mental and physical fitness of the present Morton team.

Although it could be asked about the team over the last couple of seasons. Every week that I go to see the team play I’m always wondering why, when we take on part-time clubs, they seem much fitter and up for the match than the Morton players.

They don’t look that tired after the 90 minutes, even though they are taking on a full-time team. This leads to the conclusion that the part-timers, who are only training two or three times a week, have got the correct coaching and that the manager knows how to get the best out of his players.

Morton are a full-time team training Monday to Friday with the game on the Saturday. I would like to know why they seem to struggle against the teams that run at them week after week.

Now the Morton players should be able to cope with this if they have greater levels of fitness with their full-time training! But this isn’t happening. Is it the coaching they are getting? Is it the fitness regime that’s making them look so tired and lacking any enthusiasm throughout the 90 minutes? There is something not right and it is very obvious to see when standing or sitting watching the match.

I ask these questions as a former athlete who trained seven days a week, sometimes twice a day, who would expect to beat fellow athletes who only trained three or four times a week.

So I would say to Douglas Rae, I think you could save yourself a few pounds by doing something you have been threatening to do for a few years now — go part-time. It cannot be any worse than what we are seeing at Cappielow every second week.

Or maybe you could pick a manager who could take the Ton to the top echelons of Scottish football where we belong and what you deserve for the amount of time, effort and money you have put into this once great football team. Cameron Spence, Greenock I THINK that change is needed at Greenock Morton FC.

Over the last four games, the team have been unable to see off part-time opposition, losing three, one of these in the cup against a non-league club, and last week getting ‘out of jail’ to snatch a draw in injury time at home to Brechin City.

I think that some of the Morton’s performances and results this season have been unsatisfactory, particularly in what appears to be a very poor league I think that transformation at the very top of the club is badly needed, sooner rather than later, if the club hope to make any kind of significant progress in Scottish football.

NAME AND ADDRESS SUPPLIED OH well, that’s Christmas ruined for us Morton supporters as our poor mini slump continues after we huffed and puffed against Peterhead on Saturday!

Morton really should have had the game won easily in the first half but missed at least two sitters before being hit with a sucker punch straight after half-time.

At the end of the game a section of our support vented their frustration at Jim Duffy and, whilst I don’t think it’s time to sack him, I do question some of his team selections.

I think it’s time to try Thomas O’Ware and Michael Miller at central defence as once again we lost a game due to terrible defending through the middle of our defence.

I also think Duffy should have Mark Russell and Conor Pepper on from the start but unfortunately the manager seemed to think otherwise. As for the six players out of contract and on loan I personally think we should only keep two or perhaps three of them and bring in some experience into the team.
