In a hectic 24 hours, the 21-year-old secured his St Mirren release, signed with the Ton until the end of the season and started away at Stenhousemuir the following day.

And he marked his first start with the third goal in a 3-2 win at Ochilview — a strike that he admitted caused him to get a bit carried away.

He told the Tele: “To get a goal on your debut, you can’t really ask for much more. It was brilliant to do that.

“I actually got booked for the celebration. I just got carried away and jumped into the crowd. It was a bit of adrenaline with everything going so well. The emotions just took over.

“After the celebration I actually had a small cut on my lip which was bleeding and I actually had to go off with that!” The former Hibs hitman, below, struggled for game time in Paisley this term, making just two starts and 14 sub appearances in the first half of the season. For Caldwell it was important to go somewhere he felt wanted, and he revealed that Ton boss Jim Duffy had also attempted to sign him last summer.

And he says his ambition for the remainder of the campaign is to play an important part in the Ton’s bid to achieve automatic promotion.

He added: “I was only on a year’s contract at St Mirren and it wasn’t looking like I was going to get any games.

The gaffer, Tealey [Gary Teale], told me I could leave or go out on loan.

“I needed games and Morton put in a proposal to sign me until the end of the season. He [Teale] was happy to do it and I’m happy to be here.

“The gaffer here tried to get me in the summer when I was released by Hibs and before I went to St Mirren, so it shows that he really wanted me.

“You want to play for someone who rates you, someone who wants you, and he put faith in me by playing me after one training session.

“I want to repay that faith by playing as many games and scoring as many goals as I can and hopefully that will help carry us to automatic promotion and where we deserve to be.”
