Peter MacDonald, Ross Caldwell, Ross Forbes and Grant Adam have all arrived at Cappielow over the course of the January transfer window.

And McCluskey reckons the acquisitions have underlined the club’s commitment to winning the League One title.

He told the Tele: “The players the manager has brought in can only benefit us. They’re very good signings and it makes a wee statement to the fans that we really, really want to win this league.

“I was buzzing to hear Peaso had signed. It was quite a surprise because I thought he might have been back in the team up at Dundee after coming back from his wee injury. I know he’s had a wee injury but once he gets himself fully fit, he’ll score 10 goals easy between now and the end of the season.

“And it won’t just be on the park, he’s brilliant about the place as well, in the dressing room and for the younger boys. He’s already been talking to them and kind of coaching them a wee bit as well as training.” McCluskey knows from experience the positive impact the 34-year-old can have after playing with him at both St Johnstone and Dundee.

He added: “I was still quite young when I left Hibs for St Johnstone. Peaso was about 26 at the time and looked after me when I went up there.

“I broke my metatarsal twice at St Johnstone so only played alongside him a couple of times and when he came to Dundee, I was only there with him for three months before I left. Because of that we’ve not played that many games together so I’m looking forward to playing alongside him for Morton.”
