The 25-year-old recently agreed to sign for the Ton from Dunfermline Athletic in a move which saw Andy Barrowman head in the opposite direction.

But he also had a brief flirtation with the club two and a half years ago, linking up with Allan Moore’s squad for a two-week training stint with a view to winning a deal.

The midfielder impressed as a trialist in friendlies against Rapid Bucharest and Albion Rovers but felt he couldn’t pass up an opportunity to try his luck with a club in the Romanian top flight.

Although things didn’t work out to plan in Eastern Europe and that by the time he returned home Moore had used up his playing budget, Forbes has no regrets.

However, the former Motherwell and Partick Thistle man revealed his decision was straightforward this time around as he instinctively felt it was the right move.

He told the Tele: “I’ve agreed to sign with Morton until the end of the season. I think Jim Duffy asked [Dunfermline manager] John Potter to put it to me. So it was up to me basically. I spoke to Jim and quickly made my mind up. I think a change would do me good.

“I like the way Morton play and think it would suit me better. Jim Duffy also has a lot of experience, so there were a few different factors. I’m really looking forward to it and I think our main aim is to win the league and that’s the only thing on my mind just now. If that’s not your aim there’s no point in playing.

“But you can see how tight a league it is and there will be other teams who’ll think they can win the league, like Stranraer who are doing brilliantly. So it will be hard.” When asked about his 2012 Ton trial spell, he explained: “I was in training for a few weeks, but then my agent got a phone call asking if I would be interested in going to Romania.

“I think it might have come about because I scored in the Europa League for Motherwell against Steaua Bucharest a few years before.

“I went over there for a week on trial at a club called Gaz Metan Medias. It was real experience. They were based in Transylvania and it was a different lifestyle, like how it was here 20 or 30 years ago.

“The standard of football was brilliant, but things didn’t work out and by the time I came back Allan Moore had signed somebody else, which was totally understandable.

“That meant the opportunity just wasn’t there anymore. It wasn’t as though I didn’t want to sign or he didn’t want to sign me, it was just circumstances that prevented it.

“I didn’t regret going, because the opportunity was there and I came back and signed for [Partick] Thistle. It was just one of those things.” Ton were a Championship club at that time and now that he’s here, Forbes is determined to do his utmost to help them get back there, starting with a win against Ayr United on his debut today.

He said: “You’re always looking to start every game as a player. Hopefully I’ll get a wee bit more game time here at Morton and be able to show what I can do. I’m really looking forward to the Ayr game today and getting started. We’re obviously looking for the win; that’s the aim. I can’t wait to get out there and play.”
