IT could be argued that the past few weeks, particularly the past few days, have been a period of excitement and anticipation for the Cappielow faithful, with the reunion of two blasts from a, somewhat, successful past in Peter MacDonald and Michael Tidser.

However, the signing of two stars of this calibre does raise some concerns with me. Yes, both are exceptionally talented players who, on their day, have the ability to change the outcome of a game. There is no denying this and it is an enviable position to be in.

The crux of my argument lies with the length of the contract offered to Tidser and, if rumours are to believed, the price that the players now consume on a weekly basis. It was not long ago we were challenging for the Championship title, with MacDonald and Tidser leading the way and at the same time the owner of Greenock Morton Football Club reminded fans, yet again, that the prospect of part-time football was looming over Sinclair Street.

We have now offered one player a full-time deal on what can be described as a ‘competitive’ wage which would suggest that there are no plans, in the next two and a half years, for Greenock Morton to return to part-time football.

However, the bigger picture would show that attendances are down, we are not generating a great deal of revenue and we are in the third tier of Scottish football trailing part-time clubs. Is the signing of a luxury player in Tidser further evidence of mismanagement of Greenock Morton and is it adding further to an already growing debt at the club?

The owner seems happy to take the plaudits for digging deep to fund such deals but who is really paying for it when Morton lose £300,000 per annum and the current owner wants every penny of investment back. It seems to me it is more debt for the next owner to pick up!

NAME AND ADDRESS SUPPLIED LAST week I commented on the possibility of signing Michael Tidser and that if we managed to get him in it could be hugely significant if Morton are to be crowned champions at the end of the season.

As the news came through that we had signed him, you could sense the excitement and even surprise amongst us Morton fans as the feel good factor returned.

Unfortunately it can only happen at Morton as at the time of writing this letter we find we cannot play him until August!

What a monumental blunder this is and certainly removed that feel good factor prior to Saturday evening’s game against Dunfermline.

Thankfully the boys rallied and got us a well-deserved victory that puts us right in the mix for the title.

I also mentioned last week that we needed Conor Pepper in the starting 11 and I believe we only started to take command of Saturday’s game once he came on as a substitute.

Next up for Morton is a trip to Forfar and if by some magic we have Tidser available AND Pepper in the team then I’m convinced we will take a further huge step towards achieving our goal!
