RED-HOT Under-14s striker Calum Barry is looking to match Morton legend Allan McGraw’s sensational tally of 58 goals in a single season — for the second year in a row.

Mr McGraw, who was recently inducted into the Ton hall of fame, hit the club record total in the highly successful and much-celebrated 1963-64 campaign.

And after managing 28 goals in the first half of this season, Hong Kong-born hitman Barry has set his sights on 30 more by the summer to equal his return from last term.

Coach Callum Robb told the Tele: “Calum has targeted around about 30 goals in the second half of the season to try and match last season’s tally of 58.

“Calum’s an ambitious boy and pretty confident. We had a few tough games to start the second half of the season, and he’s notched in all of them.

“He made a positive start scoring four in three matches since we returned from the winter break against the likes of Ayr, Dumbarton and Airdrie.

“Those included a stunning lob after turning the defender with a clever flicked header. Knowing the keeper was off his line, he took it early on the half-volley and put it away.

“He also scored two against a touring team from America recently. He’s rattled in quite a few goals in friendlies — but refuses to count them!

“He’s more than capable of knocking in a hat-trick a game in the matches we have left against some of the other teams in the league, though. I think he’ll get there.” Robb reckons Barry has some of the key qualities that make for an effective striker, but also admits there are areas of his game that the 14-year-old must continue to develop.

He added: “Calum is pacey, tall and very strong with broad shoulders. He’s also a strong runner and loves a ball to run on to.

“One of the areas he’s working on is his hold-up play, and that is improving. His link-up is getting better.

“Whereas before he would try and do everything himself, he’s now popping balls off and bringing midfielders into the game.

“His movement has also improved, because at first it was just about getting the ball in behind for him to chase, be that a long ball or a pass slipped down the channel.

"So he’s improving his all-round game and beginning to kick-on. He’s one who we’re thinking of pushing up to the Under-15s at some point to give him a new challenge, as well as a reward.”
