PORT Glasgow return to Newmains tomorrow, just three weeks after the ill-fated attempt to play the fixture in mid-February.

Then, the squad had travelled through to the Lanarkshire town, only to discover on arrival that storm damage to the pavilion at Victoria Park meant the game couldn’t be played there.

Newmains then managed to arrange an alternative park, and although unsuitable for junior football, the Port may have been willing to play on it in a bid to get the fixture completed.

But when they discovered it had no power or water, it was a no-brainer to call the game off and return home.

There should be no such issues tomorrow, for a match which the Port must win if they are to retain any lingering hope of featuring in the promotion hunt, as the end of the season draws near.

In any other season their haul of just 19 points from 15 matches would most likely have seen them well out of contention already.

But this season has been like no other for many a year, with a series of highly unpredictable results, and every team seemingly being able to beat each other on a good day.

The most eye-catching upset involved tomorrow’s opponents, when Newmains beat league leaders and champions-elect Rossvale 1-0 away from home.

But that has been the Lanarkshire club’s only victory this season, and it proved to be a flash in the pan when the Port thumped them 7-0 just seven days later.

So anything other than three points for Craig Brown’s men tomorrow would be a major disappointment. The gaffer looks likely to give loan signing Craig Knight another starting berth.

The youngster is one of seven players from Morton’s youth development squad to be farmed out to various junior clubs until the end of the season.

Under Ton boss Jim Duffy’s scheme, the players can also still feature for the squad’s midweek matches in addition to training one night a week with their respective junior sides and playing for them on a Saturday.

Reports suggest Knight did well against St Roch’s last Saturday, despite the 4-2 defeat, and is a welcome addition to the Port defence.

Meanwhile, former Greenock Juniors player Colin Stevenson has popped up on the radar again.

After at least two spells with the Ravenscraig club, Stevenson has been named as a trialist on the Port team-lines, and is likely to do the same tomorrow.

But both Graeme McClement and Dylan McLaughlin are struggling to make it.

McClement had to come off midway through the second half of the match at St Roch’s, and has been unable to train this week.

And neither has McLaughlin, who is still hampered with a knee injury.

But the Port ought to have enough about them to see off the challenge of Newmains and get the points needed to keep their promotion prospects alive in the four remaining league games after tomorrow.

Kick-off at Victoria Park, Newmains is at 2pm.
