Bobby Barr gave the visitors the lead with a late penalty and Jamie Masson wrapped up the win with a stunning free-kick two minutes from time.

Glebe Park gaffer McKinnon was delighted with the way his team executed his gameplan and felt they were well worthy of their victory, pointing to opportunities created as evidence.

He said: “We knew how tough it would be coming down here today.

“Morton have been up there the whole season, [and] are a full-time club on the back of a great result last week.

“So we knew how tough it would be – but we also knew how the game would unfold, and it’s unfolded exactly the way we expected it to.

“The last thing we were going to do was come here and let them dictate the game, so we had to press them down channel, and we did that.

“As I said to the guys, the more the game goes on, the more the game will open up simply because what was at stake today. I thought we played the game perfectly. My players executed it perfectly.

“They had to push for three points and we’ve caught them on the counter a few times, so we’re delighted. It’s a great performance.

“Overall, I think we deserved it. We had more chances in the game than they had. To be fair, Buzz [Graeme Smith] has made an exceptional save in the first half, I’ve got to be honest.

“He’s had two saves: one in the first half and one in the second half when the guy [Stefan McCluskey] has gone clean through.

“But overall I think we had more chances than them, so it was a deserved three points. Make no mistake, we deserved that win. So I’m obviously delighted.

“The three points were important to us as well today. Let’s not make any mistakes, this was a big three points because we had a lot to play for today and the guys were excellent.”
