Stevie Aitken’s Blues are in pole position on 64 points, with the Greenock men and Forfar both breathing down their necks on 63 points.

Former Hibs man McCluskey helped set the stage last Saturday when he opened the scoring against Stirling Albion with a superbly-taken goal that served to settle Ton’s nerves.

The 27-year-old has been savouring the build-up this week but admits he is at the point now where he just cannot wait for kick-off.

An excited McCluskey told the Tele: “How do I feel? I love it. These are the games you start playing football for when you’re young.

“You want to be playing in games with big crowds and a bit of pressure. These are the positions you want to be in: you want to win titles and championships.

“If you’re not, and you’re in mid-table, you’re just playing every week for nothing. There’s no point.

“There are younger boys in the team where this will be the biggest game they’ve ever played and I can’t speak for them. You put two and two together and you’d think they’ll be nervous.

“You just need to tell them to go out and play the way they do in training every day and all through the season. You need to use your head.

“But I can tell you the now, all the boys are buzzing and ready to go. Training has been good, so it’s just one of those games you can’t wait to get started.

“I’m excited. I just wish it was a 3pm kick-off instead of the later time just to get the game going as soon as possible.” The 5.30pm kick-off means both teams will go into the match fully aware of how third-placed Forfar have fared at Dunfermline. That aspect isn’t something that bothers McCluskey. In fact, he feels it might even make for a more exciting match at Stair Park.

The 27-year-old added: “Obviously everybody will know the result of the Dunfermline and Forfar game before we kick-off. Knowing that could just make it a better game, couldn’t it?

“But whatever happens there happens. We have just got to concentrate on and look after ourselves, play well and do the right things.” When asked if he felt tonight’s encounter would be an open, attacking game or a tight and tense affair, he said: “It was similar with the Norwich and Middlesbrough match last Friday.

“No one wants to make the first mistake and go behind first. It’s kind of what you would say is ‘a nervy game’.

“But we’re going down there to win. We know we need to go down there and try and win, and the manager has told us that.

“We actually had to win our last four to give ourselves a good chance. We’ve won two of them, so we need to win this one too.

“It’s easy enough to say that but you’ve got to do it on the park.” The game is set up for individual members of the current squad to write their name into Morton folklore.

Both McCluskey brothers have been heroes with crucial goals of late, but Jamie says he doesn’t care which one of his team-mates gets the glory tonight just as long as Ton get the three points.

He said: “Deccy [Declan McManus] has hit the 20 mark and I think myself and Stefan are the next behind him. I think we’ve got 13 between us this year.

“I don’t really score a lot of goals — I tend to create a little bit more — but I’ve got six and Stef’s got seven, so the two of us are happy with that.

“But it doesn’t matter who scores them. It was about getting the win against Stenhousemuir, it was about getting the win last Saturday and it’s the same today.”
