You could have heard a pin drop inside Cappielow when the Blue Toon took a shock 17th-minute lead through Gary McDonald.

But Miller broke the stunned silence and got the Greenock ground rocking again by rifling home a searing low drive to draw the Ton level on 36 minutes. Despite making 23 starts and six sub appearances over the course of the campaign, it was on the grandest stage of the season that the former Celtic kid broke his duck.

He admitted he couldn’t have possibly picked a bigger occasion to score his first goal for the club and only the second of his playing career.

Taking a moment out from the celebrations to speak to the Tele in the Cappielow corridor, the midfielder beamed: “That was some feeling, absolutely brilliant. Just great.” But even in that quiet corner of the stadium there was no escaping the praise for his stunning strike.

Various Under-20s players rushed back and forward between the pitch and bowels of the stadium, with centre-half John Tennent hailing ‘Mikey Miller!’ at the top of his lungs as he passed.

After a laugh at the joyful interjection, he went on: “It just summed us up a bit this season — the fact we went behind and came back. We did it again, showing resilience as always. We’ve done it all season really, haven’t we?

“We’ve rode our luck at times but it’s happened on too many occasions for it to be coincidence. There was a bit more pressure going into the game, knowing how important it was and there were just over 6,000 fans there.

“That was absolutely brilliant and they stood up and got right behind the team, even when we did go 1-0 down. Our heads never went down at all. I always felt we would come back — but I don’t know what happened there [scoring the equaliser].

“It’s funny, the first goal I scored professionally was a similar goal for Dumbarton away at Queen of the South when I was on loan there last season.

“That might have been in my head and I just hit it. It was great to score. It was my first goal for Morton — but better late than never!

“I wish I could say I meant to hold off for the big occasion but I’d have happily taken one on the first day of the season.

“But all that mattered was winning the game. It was brilliant to just get over the line. We deserved it.” Exuberant development squad defender Luke Irvine was the next to hail the goal hero in passing, roaring: ‘What a goal Mikey! What a goal!’ Before rushing back to join in the celebrations, Miller concluded: “My family all came down and were in the stand.

“I’m 20 and it’s brilliant to have won a title at this age. Hopefully there will be some more but I’m just going to enjoy this.”
