Inverkip native Knight, a former First Touch and Gourock YAC player, signed a two-year full-time deal with the Ton last summer.

The right-back made three appearances for the first team in season 2013-14 but struggled with injury last term as well as spending a short spell on loan at local junior outfit Port Glasgow.

Morton director Warren Hawke revealed Knight, 18, recently made a request to be released from his contract to pursue a different career path, which the club consented to.

Hawke told the Tele: “Craig is a talented young player, there’s no doubt about that. He was very fit, up and down the pitch.

“He got a few injuries at the back end of last season that he couldn’t quite shake off and I think that got him down a little bit.

“He approached us and asked to be released.

“He’s looking to go to a new career and we’ve got to be fair to the boy.

“We wish Craig all the best for the future.” Knight tweeted: “Decided to terminate my contract with Morton. Would like to wish the boys all the best for next season and the future.”
