MORTON boss Jim Duffy was pleased to land a home draw in the Petrofac Training Cup — but concedes he would have preferred to play non-Championship opposition.

Ton were paired with Dumbarton when the first round draw was made on Monday and will have the advantage of the tie being played at Cappielow.

While the Ton manager is happy about that, he feels that meeting a club from the same division in cup competition is not ideal — as it means five games, at least, between the sides.

It was a problem Ton encountered last term when they faced league rivals Airdrie no fewer than six times after a Scottish Cup tie went to a replay.

Reflecting on Monday’s draw, Duffy said: “If you get a team from a different league then there’s a bit of freshness about it.” The Ton boss says he expects a ‘tough’ test against the Sons of the Rock in what will be the first competitive game of the season, pointing to the arrival of Dumbarton’s highly-rated new manager Stevie Aitken, above.

He said: “Both teams will still be finding their feet again. Stevie Aitken’s gone in there and we know that he did a magnificent job at Stranraer.

“He also knows us well from last season in League One.

“We are looking forward to the game.”
