Despite eventually cruising to a comfortable 5-0 victory over the Borough Briggs men, goalkeeper Gaston was forced to work for his clean sheet.

The Ton No1 produced two truly world-class stops over the 90 minutes, the first of which was actually rendered immaterial by an offside flag against Craig Gunn.

However, a 53rd-minute save to deny Brian Cameron from close-range was as important as it was spectacular, preserving as it did his side’s 1-0 lead.

Duffy raved: “Gats didn’t have too much to do but when he was called upon he made fantastic saves. The one he made when their boy [Cameron] delayed and then went to hit it was unbelievable.

“I mean we were sitting in the dugout saying we couldn’t believe he saved it. We all resigned ourselves to it being a goal. Gats has been top class since I came to the club. I don’t know what he was like before it — but he’s been unbelievable since I came and long may it continue.” The opposition were left stunned by the stop and manager Jim Weir and skipper Jamie Duff both identified it as a crucial moment in the match. Weir said: “I was really pleased with our first half but also disappointed over a couple of penalty decisions we didn’t get.

“There was a handball incident and also a foul in the box, but even after that we were confident at half-time after a good first half.

“It was a poor goal for us to lose right at the start of the second half and then we missed a great chance to level the game.

“Brian Cameron, who is a really big player for us, probably should have scored — but their keeper made an amazing save.” Duff added: “Brian Cameron had a great chance to make it 1-1 but their keeper brought off an unbelievable save.”
