And the goalkeeper is intrigued by the prospect of recording a win on league duty tomorrow night, as he expects the party would be on a whole different level again.

Gaston was on the bench as the Greenock men ran out 4-2 winners at Greenhill Road just over two years ago to record their first regional cup success since 2005.

Those eight years pale in comparison to the 16 years and counting Ton supporters have spent without tasting success in a competitive derby.

And Gaston hopes the current squad can spark scenes to totally eclipse those which followed the 2013 success by ending the long wait for a league victory over their deadly rivals this Friday. The 28-year-old told the Tele: “The Renfrewshire Cup is only a pre-season friendly in essence, but I saw how important it is to the fans to beat St Mirren in those games. When we won at St Mirren’s place the other year, the players were all over at the fans with the trophy, and the fans were enjoying it.

“You maybe don’t expect them to celebrate it the way they did. I think it might have been a while since Morton won in the Renfrewshire Cup.

“It maybe added to it that it was at their place as well. It’s always that wee bit more special if you manage to turn them over on their own park.

“Even if it’s only a friendly, it’s still good to get one over your rivals. You could also see that from the way St Mirren celebrated goals against us in the two derby games I’ve played at Cappielow.

“It obviously means a lot — and I think it will be on a whole different level if we manage to win the game tomorrow night, especially with the increased crowd.

“The television will be there in the Cowshed, so it will be a wee bit cramped in there; everybody will be a lot closer to each other and that might make for an even better atmosphere. This is what it’s all about, playing in big games like this, and I think everybody’s excited for it: the players, the staff, the fans — everybody!

“If we are able to win on Friday it will be a big occasion for everyone connected with the club.” Morton come into the match having picked up one point from a possible six in the Ladbrokes Championship, and Gaston says this would have been a disappointing return in any other season.

However, he insists that is not the feeling this term and reckons the performances against Falkirk and Hibs have been cause for confidence ahead of the big derby date.

He added: “I think we played well against Hibs and obviously frustrated them. The start of the game went to plan.

“We kept it tight and defended really well. And not just the defenders. The players in front and even Peaso [Peter MacDonald] and Denny [Johnstone] did too.

“We restricted them to long-range shots and crosses into the box, and you’re quite happy to do that against a team of Hibs’ quality even if some of the crosses are causing some problems.

“Obviously we managed to frustrate them until the 58th minute when they decided they had to put another man up front, and it paid off straight away. That one wee lapse of concentration and that wee bit of extra quality was enough for them to get that one good chance and score.

“If you switch off for one second against the really good teams in the league, you will be punished. That’s the difference between playing League One last year and this season. But we definitely take confidence from the performance even though we lost the match.

“I think if in any other season you take one point from the first two games, everyone’s kind of down and thinking it’s a bad start.

“We’d usually be quite annoyed about it. But we’ve played Falkirk, and Hibs away, and I think in both of the games we’ve actually played quite well.

“Obviously you would still prefer to have more points, but the performances are quite important as we’ve competed really well against both teams.” Tomorrow’s derby will be screened live on TV for the first time ever, with BBC Alba beaming the match out to homes across the UK tomorrow night.

The Gaelic language station also featured Ton twice last term, and Gaston is hoping to continue his fine record in front of the cameras after keeping clean sheets against Dunfermline and Stranraer.

He smiled: “We have a good record on the TV. We won both games 2-0 last season, so the cameras have been lucky for us.

“We’ve kept two clean sheets as well and I’d take that again this week.

“But any sort of win will do me. It doesn’t matter if it’s 5-4 or 1-0, as long as we get the three points.”
