Swansea loan striker Samuel scored twice as Jim Duffy’s men disposed of the struggling Steelmen in an epic League Cup tie, which finished 3-2 after extra-time The 20-year-old was a surprise starter alongside Peter MacDonald as Ton boss Duffy freshened up his strike force after the team’s exertions at Queen of the South on Saturday.

Samuel was thrilled to open his Cappielow account against top flight opposition, describing it as ‘the perfect night’.

And hopes to have earned the right to retain his place in the starting line-up and try and help his side slay the Ibrox outfit in Sunday’s huge live TV fixture.

Speaking exclusively to the Tele, the exhilarated frontman said: “It was a nice surprise to start and when you get those chances you have to take them.

“The higher you go through the football ranks, the less chances you have and I’m just delighted to get my two goals.

“Scoring goals is what I do and what I love doing.

“With the first one it just fell to me and I think the best thing to do there is just put your foot through it. It went in and that was awesome.

“Tuesday was honestly a perfect night. "I couldn’t think of anything better. The fans were awesome and it’s just everything you ever dream of, scoring goals on an occasion like that.

“It was great to do that against a Premiership team like Motherwell too and all I can do is continue to put everything into it, work hard, and the goals will come.

“We now go from Tuesday into the Rangers match on Sunday. That will be another big game for us and I’m looking forward to that, learning how to improve and hopefully performing good there.” Samuel was named sponsors’ man of the match for a tenacious attacking display in which he refused to give the Well centre-half pairing of Stephen McManus and Kieran Kennedy a second’s peace.

But the modest Welshman turned the subject matter to the squad’s never-say-die spirit rather than dwell on the many personal plaudits he has received for his stand-out performance.

He added: “It was a difficult game, their defenders were very strong, so you’ve got to just think of making those runs in behind.

“But it’s all about the team, you know? I wouldn’t have performed like that if it wasn’t for the rest of the team. It was a kick in the teeth to concede such a late goal, but again the lads showed character, all of us, and that’s what happens when you don’t give up.

“The whole team played awesome. We put everything into it and my performance was an all-round one which fitted in with the team.”
