The current Cappielow goalkeeping coach was part of the Ton team that ran out 3-2 winners against the Ibrox outfit in the last league meeting between the clubs back on 9 April 1988.

According to Wylie, besting a side boasting the likes of Chris Woods, Ally McCoist, Ian Durrant, Ray Wilkins and Mark Walters came down to hard work and a great team spirit.

And as someone who is around the current crop of players on a regular basis in his capacity as a member of the coaching staff, he knows those are terms that apply to the present squad.

Speaking exclusively to the Tele, the 49-year-old said: “It’s a massive game to play Rangers down here. It’s going to be a full house, it’s on the TV and you’re up against a team that are playing really well.

“My memories of that game back in 1988 are Derek Collins’ goal and us getting pounded by Rangers for the last 15 minutes. It was wave after wave after wave.

“They were big favourites. I don’t know what happened with them that day but we played out of our skins. Every one of us came off that park absolutely shattered.

“What was the secret to that win? Everybody worked for each other. There was a lot of covering for each other and a lot of communication. It was brilliant.

“I think the key to success on Sunday will be hard work again, and the manager has got them working hard for each other.

“It’s not about individuals, it’s about knowing if you lose the ball, somebody will be behind you saying: ‘I’ll get it.’ “I know this team now, and they work hard for each other. Really, really hard for each other.

“There’s a great spirit and we saw it on Tuesday night against Motherwell. I’m not saying we’re going to do this or going to do that, but there’s a hard working bunch of boys in there, a good team spirit, a good manager and assistant manager who are doing the business.

“We go into the game knowing Rangers are a great team, we know they are going to be favourites but the boys have to go out, play their best and work for each other and see what happens.”
