Rory Burns and Rikki Clarke both scored hundreds as Surrey extended their advantage over Nottinghamshire on the second day of their Specsavers County Championship match at Trent Bridge.

Burns made 153 and Clarke scored 111 as the unbeaten Division One leaders totalled 592 to claim a first innings lead of 382 over second-placed Notts.

Surrey’s charge towards their first championship title since 2002 looks like being a personal triumph for popular captain Burns, who faced a total of 248 balls, hitting 23 fours and a six.

At Old Trafford, Yorkshire struck six times after tea to leave Lancashire forlornly chasing 323 in the Roses clash.

Yorkshire started day two with an 83-run lead and slipped to 21 for three before Jonny Bairstow’s 82 led the recovery to 239 all out.

Lancashire started their chase immediately after tea and had 48 overs to bat, closing on 194 for six, needing 129 more.

At New Road, Jamie Overton and Josh Davey shared eight wickets to give Somerset the upper hand against Worcestershire.

Overton took four for 61 from 15 overs, while Davey contributed four for 68 as Worcestershire were dismissed for 257 in their first innings, a deficit of 80.

Somerset openers Marcus Trescothick and Ed Byrom then extended their overall advantage to 127 by the close in reaching 47 without loss.

In Divison Two, Sussex stepped up their promotion campaign with a comprehensive defeat of Glamorgan by an innings and 154 runs to move to second.

It was their third straight win and they achieved it by taking 20 Glamorgan wickets in two sessions.

The match was completed by its outstanding player, Jofra Archer, who uprooted Lukas Carey’s middle stump to give him eight wickets in the match.

Elsewhere, Harry Dearden hit a quickfire 50 to help Leicestershire thrash Kent by 10 wickets.

Having dismissed their title-chasing hosts for 104, Leicestershire batted sensibly to garner a match-defining first-innings lead of 125.

Batting second time around, Kent succumbed for 199 inside 50 overs, leaving the visitors to knock off 75 without loss in 15.4 overs for their fourth win of the campaign.

At Lord’s, Warwickshire skipper Jeetan Patel gave his side the upper hand against Middlesex with a late four-wicket burst.

Patel, who ended the day with figures of four for 38, initiated a Middlesex middle-order collapse as four wickets went down for 27 runs to leave the home side just 143 ahead at the close.

Middlesex had earlier restricted the Bears to a first-innings lead of just 40 after bowling them out for 276, despite a career-best 118 from opener Will Rhodes.

At Chesterfield, Alex Wakely scored a century and Matt Critchley celebrated his best first-class figures as Derbyshire and Northamptonshire continued to trade blows.

Captain Wakely made 106 for the visitors and shared a sixth-wicket stand of 120 with Steven Crook (60) but Critchley’s four for 88 triggered a late collapse that limited Northants to 289 and a slender lead of 29.

Half-centuries from Derbyshire duo Ben Slater (53) and Wayne Madsen (52 not out) tilted the initiative towards the hosts until two late wickets from Seekkuge Prasanna left the home side 147 for four with a lead of 118.

At Cheltenham, Tom Latham’s battling century frustrated Gloucestershire’s bid to take control of their match with Durham.

The visitors’ stand-in skipper hit an unbeaten 120, remaining rock solid as his side slipped to 105 for four in reply to the home team’s 362 all out.

Thanks largely to Latham’s first ton of the season, Durham were able to close on 219 for five, but still trailed by 143.
