GREENOCK boxing champ John Simpson says his fight-game future could be at lightweight — if he takes down Tommy Coyle in Hull tomorrow night.

John has travelled down to England ahead of the pair’s crucial IBF showdown tomorrow and is primed for the weigh-in at 1pm today.

The 30-year-old has decided to step up a division after previously ruling the roost at super featherweight — and says he is absolutely determined to seize this chance.

In an interview ahead of tomorrow’s televised clash, John told the Tele how he feels the weight change can give him a crucial edge.

He said: “At this weight I know I’ll not be knackered on the night — I feel as fresh as a daisy and expect to be flying tomorrow.

“At times before I’ve felt like I was just stripping muscle away before my fights but now I am punching hard.

“In the middle of this week I was more or less at the weight with my sparring all done and I am happy because I feel sharp.” With the fight being finalised at relatively short notice, Simpson had less than a month to get himself ready for his latest challenge.

But he feels his preparation could not have gone any better — and believes that his battle-hardened experience at the top level will eventually tell tomorrow night.

John said: “I’ve not had much time but three weeks of sparring should be enough.

“I have the experience and have been on a bigger platform before.

“But Coyle is a big boy and it’s going to be a tough fight.

“He gave Derry Mathews a hard fight in July but I’m not so sure that Derry brought his A-game that night.

“I expect him to come out and fight, it’s his home show with 4,000 of his fans there but that won’t faze me.

“He’ll probably think he can outmuscle me but I’ll just do what I do in every fight.” Although John is firmly focused on tomorrow night’s battle he also knows that he will have a decision to make on Sunday about his next move. He said: “If I was to win I would probably stay at lightweight.

“I am due to be fighting again in February and what that fight will be all depends on how I perform tomorrow.” l John would like to thank his sponsors Mitchell’s Hire Drive and Dunn’s MOT Testing, plus Phil Paul of Clyde Injury Clinic and Andy Armour of Armour Training.
