GREENOCK Morton Hockey Club Men’s first team endured mixed fortunes as they took three points from a possible six in their two Regional Indoor League matches.

In their first match, Greenock took on fellow National League Division 2 side Glasgow University.

Poor finishing cost Greenock as they eventually lost out 6-5, despite having created a far greater number of goalscoring opportunities than their opponents. The first half finished 3-3 after an end-to-end affair in which Greenock passed up several excellent chances that could and perhaps should have seen them take a comfortable lead into the break.

Chris Caldwell, Martin McIntosh and Jamie Terris all managed to get on the scoresheet, but sloppy defending at the other end of the pitch meant that it was all square at the break.

Fraser Calder put Greenock 4-3 up just after half-time, but despite coming close to extending their lead on several occasions, Greenock allowed their opponents to score three unanswered goals to take a 6-4 lead.

Chris Caldwell scored his second goal of the match to make it 6-5, and despite pulling keeper Scott Jones in the last minute in favour of an extra attacker, Greenock couldn’t manage to find an equaliser.

In their second match Greenock took on Falkirk’s second team, and the gulf between the sides was evident, with Greenock scoring six goals in the first half.

Martin McIntosh scored a brace, with Chris Caldwell, Fraser Calder, Jamie Terris and David Rankin grabbing a goal each before the interval.

Occasionally complacency did creep in however, allowing Falkirk to score two goals of their own, meaning that Greenock took a 6-2 lead into half-time.

The second half was a similar story, with McIntosh completing his hat-trick to make it 7-2 with a wonderful flick into the top corner of the net from a tight angle.

Falkirk managed to grab a third goal despite what looked to have been a foul in the D, but Fraser Calder scored his second goal from a well-worked penalty corner to make it 8-3 almost immediately.

Chris Caldwell made it 9-3 from another well-executed corner routine, before Calder completed the rout with his third goal of the game, flicking into the net from close range after his initial shot had been saved
