The nine-year-old Greenock youngster finished top of the leaderboard in his age group at the regional qualifers of the Wee Wonders championship played in Carnoustie last Sunday.

His success means that he will take on the very best from England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland at the home of golf in August.

Between now and then Scott is busy taking part in junior opens around the west coast.

It tops a fantastic season so far for the local protege, who was recently invited to play at one of the world’s top kids’ tournaments at Pinehurst, a former US Open course.

Scott, who spends hours on the course at Greenock Golf Club, said: “I’m looking forward to playing at St Andrews.

“I just love playing golf.” Scott is so talented that he often finds himself up against golfers twice his age.

Earlier this year he played in a children’s international tournament at Gullane, where he found himself up against the very best in the world.

Scott finished a respectable 17th and was subsequently invited to take part in the US Final at Pinehurst, but he was unable to play due to the short notice.

His dad Andy said: “The kids’ tournament was our first chance to gauge just where he is in terms of potential.

“It was incredible because some of the youngsters had their own coaches.

“The Russian boy had his national coach at his side.

“Scott hasn’t even had a lesson yet.

“He was invited to play at Pinehurst but it was just too short notice for us.” In the build-up to last Sunday’s round at Carnoustie Scott played in a tournament at West Kilbride Golf Club, where he is also a member.

He managed to make it into the under-18s final where he found himself playing a 16-year-old.

Andy added: “There was a crowd watching him. He is starting to get noticed. Scott beat a 16-year-old in the quarters and semis.

“But he always wants to win and he was raging he lost the final. The club has asked him to play in their team.

“Scott is always trying to improve.”
