TROPHY WIN: Mark Barilli and runner-up Joe Mitchell.

MARK Barilli regained the Inverclyde Darts League singles championship last week with a devastating display of darting excellence.

Barilli is back to his very best form, fresh from winning the Scottish Masters title for the second time three days earlier.

Green Oak B team-mate Joe Mitchell faced Mark in the best-of-seven final.

Mitchell came through an amazing run of matches, beating six of the league's best on the way - J Moran, J Murdoch, W Marshall, S Pugh, IDL number one D Callary and Comet's Fraser Syme in the semis. Syme's second semi-final appearance in a row gave Joe a tough game with a 15-dart-leg 120 checkout plus 180 max before going down 3-2.

Prince of Wales ace Evander Stevenson also reached the semi-final in sparkling form, beating A Adair, who put out defending champion G Dempsey in the previous round, and the improving D Allan in the last eight, before succumbing to Barilli 0-3 in 18,18,15 d/l.

Mark had beaten IDL No 2 D McAteer 3-0 with a 92 average (14,16,19 d/l). A McIntyre, in his first season, reached the last eight before his exit to Barilli.

The last 32 in the tournament provided an excellent night of darts drama and the final between 2010 pairs champions Mark and Joe was top notch.

Mark went two up in 18,17 d/l, Joe pulled one back in 17d, a 14 d/l put Mark 3-1 ahead. Again Joe showed his fighting spirit 2-3 in 18 d but Mark then took the title with a brilliant 12 d/l, 121 checkout.

The punters in the Broomhill bar enjoyed a tungsten feast of darts but it was a Barilli masterclass with 16 highlights on the finals night.
