Greenock Wanderers recorded a fine victory on foreign soil on Saturday when they thrashed hosts Paese RFC at the Stadio Gianni Visentin in Treviso.

The Greenock men enjoyed a 10-try romp against a young Italian side with skipper Matt Gray once more leading by example and dominating the forward exchanges.

Man of the match Graham Mooney was equally outstanding and he was ably assisted by a hard running back line that flourished in the Treviso sunshine. Leigh Tyley, Sean Connolly and Brendan McGroarty all excelled as Wanderers cut the hosts' defence to shreds throughout the 80 minutes, with stand-off David Watson orchestrating the effort superbly.

Tries were regularly recorded as Wanderers went through the phases and released their back line to devastating effect.

Skipper Gray spoke to the Telegraph by phone link immediately after the match and said: "Paese were a well-organised side but their tackling let them down a bit and we took full advantage.

"All credit to them though because they stuck to their task and got a deserved consolation try in the second half.

"The tour has been a tremendous success and we are all now looking forward to some social time before we head home on Monday." The Wanderers' tour party enjoyed some excellent hospitality courtesy of Paese RFC on Saturday evening before supporting Glasgow Warriors in their European Pro-12 League game last night against Benetton Treviso.

The group return home later this evening and conclude the weekend tour with a function in their Fort Matilda clubhouse.

Elsewhere, Wanderers Colts travelled to the Borders yesterday to contest their National Cup semi-final tie against Peebles.

The hosts were too strong for the Greenock side and recorded a deserved 33-0 victory. Coach Graham Knox said: "We were up against a much larger side today and Peebles used that to their advantage.

"We are proud of the boys' effort though and they battled gamely for the whole 80 minutes and never tired despite being under pressure for much of the match.

"They gave a good account of themselves and have grown and developed into a good side with a strong competitive edge.

"It's been a good season and the club are in a strong position as far as young talent coming through the ranks is concerned." A full report on the match will appear later in the week.
