Greenock Wanderers were crowned champions of the Scottish Hydro-Electric National League Second Division on Saturday - without having to take the field.

Their away match against Caithness at Thurso was postponed. But Lasswade went down at Stewartry which now means that they are incapable of overhauling Wanderers' lead at the top of the table.

President Dougie Sloan was naturally delighted and said: "It has been a great achievement by all concerned at the club.

"We have stuck with a policy of bringing on local talent for a number of years and it has paid dividends for us with this season's results.

"We have our final home league match in two weeks when we play Highland, and that will now become a bit of a gala occasion.

"Hopefully the SRU will be in a position to present our captain David Watson with the trophy at the end of that match in front of our own support.

"I'd like to take the opportunity of thanking the players, coaches, supporters, sponsors and back room staff for all the hard work and effort this season and we will enjoy the moment, but we still have the cup competition to look forward to.

"I'm sure the coaches, Dave McVey and Bob Adams, will want to finish the season on a high by winning our remaining three league games and taking us as far as possible in the cup."

Wanderers have a weekend off next week, but face Highland at Fort Matilda on 6 March in what is now expected to be the biggest party seen at the club for many years.

A full preview of the match will appear in the Telegraph the previous evening.
