GREENOCK Wanderers S2s took on some of the best teams in Scotland on Sunday 6 May at the Emirates Airlines Glasgow 7s 2012 Festival of Rugby.

They ran out worthy winners of the competition taking home the Bill McLaren PCS Trophy.

The competition featured 16 teams from across Scotland playing alongside the International 7s Festival.

An enthusiastic crowd of more than 26,000 fans from over the weekend leant the entire event a carnival atmosphere with many supporters turning up in fancy dress.

Greenock Wanderers S2s managed to field two squads with one of the teams just edging ahead to be declared competition winners.

Coach Kenny Lang said: "Once again the entire squad equipped themselves magnificently, and were not at all over-awed by the competition, putting in a great display of 7s rugby throughout the day.

"We were fortunate enough to be located alongside the international teams as they trained, and the experience of being at such a prestigious festival in front of many thousands of supporters did not daunt the players at all.

"What is most satisfying however is that the award is not presented because the boys won all their games but more so because the award is presented for fair play, sportsmanship, skills and respect for opponents, team mates and officials.

"The fact the trophy is awarded by the Bill McLaren Foundation makes it all the more special."

The added highlights of the day included meeting many of the international teams, and their rugby heroes such as Scotland star Richie Gray. As the youth tournament champions, Greenock Wanderers S2s were given a prime position in the tournament parade immediately behind Glasgow Warriors, who led the parade.

For the talented youngsters, walking around the stadium being cheered by thousands of supporters was a great experience for the boys and one that they will remember for a long time.

Kenny added: "The S2 coaches would like to extend our thanks to the teams' supporters who regularly travel far and wide in all weather, to watch the boys play.

"They have been excellent throughout the season and we appreciate all that they do behind the scenes on behalf of the team."
