GREENOCK Wanderers return to league duty at Fort Matilda tomorrow when they host joint-table toppers Falkirk in what is the match of the day in the Royal Bank of Scotland League Championship Division A.

Falkirk are tied in top spot with Glasgow Hutchesons Aloysians and have secured 41 points from 11 games.

Only Cartha Queen's Park and Ardrossan have defeated the men from Sunnyside and in the earlier meeting with Wanderers' this season they were good value for their 36-27 victory.

Falkirk boast a big, strong and extremely powerful pack and their success is built around forward domination, particularly at the set piece.

Wanderers are currently occupying fourth position in the league and have 35 points from their 11 games, but a victory tomorrow would put them into serious championship winning contention.

The Fort Matilda men have shown remarkable form over the last two months and have won five out of six league games and that form has jettisoned them into a title challenging position.

Head coach Graham Finnie said: "Falkirk are a good side as their league position confirms but we will approach the match with confidence and look to take them on in all areas and facets of the game.

"Their strength is in the forwards but we have a strong pack ourselves and believe we can edge them out up front and give our backline the ammunition they need to ask questions of their defence."

Injuries have played a part in Wanderers' selection over recent weeks but a more familiar squad has been posted for tomorrow's big game.

With the forecast set to be cold crisp and clear the locals will look to avoid getting sucked into a dour forward battle and play to their strengths by spinning the ball wide.

This strategy will only be successful if skipper Ally Abernethy and his pack can gain parity up front and win a sufficient supply of possession to feed the back line.

Dougie Smith, Stewart Alexander and Dave Paton get the nod in the front row and, with Matt Gray and Murray McDonald locking the scrum behind them, the indications are that Wanderers have the necessary firepower in the pack to secure their fair share of ball.

The locals' exciting and highly-rated back-row trio of skipper Ally Abernethy, Graham Mooney and Callum Robb are all reinstated after sitting out last weekend's victory against Dumfries.

They will be itching to get back into action and dominate the close quarter exchanges and prove that they are indeed the best breakaway unit in the league.

Key to Wanderers' game plan will be the on-form half-back pairing of Andy McDougall and Callum Harrison.

Their consistency has been a major factor in Wanderers' climb up the league and another astute and decisive performance from them will ensure their attacking options are maximised to the full.

Top class strike runners Brendan McGroarty and Kieren Smith effectively self-select at centre and with James Kemp, Ant Devlin and Leigh Tyley completing the line-up the Greenock men look in good shape.

Most eyes will be on McGroarty and Smith's efforts through the densely populated midfield channels but with Kemp, Devlin and Tyley also available out wide Wanderers have try-scorers in abundance right across the backline. The visitors' defence would be ill-advised to focus solely on Wanderers twin spearhead attack.

Devlin's return will further enhance Wanderers' chances with his ability with the boot from hand and tee.

The games just keep getting bigger and more important down Fort Matilda way and they don't come much bigger than a top of the table clash against a side that is fast becoming title winning favourites.

As always the Fort Matilda crowd will play a large part in proceedings and their vociferous backing is worth several points' advantage.

The Greenock faithful will be there in their droves and will be willing skipper Abernethy and his boys onto great things.

The tie, like many these days, is too close to call but Wanderers have that winning mentality. If they can seize the early initiative and close down the supply line provided by the opposition pack then the likelihood is that the locals will be celebrating their new standing as title contenders by dusk tomorrow evening.
