THIS trip down memory lane shows those attending a meeting in 1958 to organise a Greenock Corporation cleansing department football team.

The team were very successful. They won the works league cup four years in a row - from 1958 to 1961.

The picture was loaned to me by Charles O"Donnell, who was the team manager and a player, shown fourth from left in the back row.

Charles"s recollection is that all bar two of the men were cleansing department workers.

Names of those shown include: D Hepburn, R Montgomery, E McNeil, D Blue, R Ramsey, Bud Gallacher, J Brown and J McFadyen.

Charles told me the league had around 20 to 22 teams competing at that time.

Firms represented included Playtex, Fergusons, Fleming Reid, Lithgow"s Kingston yard, Walker"s, the Greenock Dockyard Company (known locally as Klondike), Hasties and IBM. Sadly, a number of the businessess mentioned no longer exist nowadays.

Games were played at Broomhill Park, Wellington Park, Ravenscraig and Parklea.

Charles told me the cleansing department team"s skills attracted a sizeable number of supporters.
