GOUROCK reader John Torlay"s old picture of the West Station area of Greenock which appeared here recently created considerable interest.

He had been given it by his late grandmother Jean Kennedy.

She also passed on to him today"s old Morton pictures featuring her father, William Kennedy, who was the club"s trainer at the start of the last century.

John"s great grandfather can be seen above left, with pipe, chatting to manager Bob Cochrane, in front of what could have been Cappielow"s main stand.

William is also on the front left of the adjacent photograph showing the Morton team of 1911-12.

John told me his mother, Margaret Torlay, recalls her grandfather living in a top-flat "room and kitchen" at the corner of Ingleston Street, Greenock. It was next to a school and a small shop.

He was a tradesman in the yards.

His daughter Jean Kennedy lived at 72 Dempster Street, Greenock, until her death in 1977.

Returning to the 1911-12 team photograph, it is understood Morton finished sixth in the league that season and reached the third round of the Scottish Cup, going out at home to Hearts 0-1.

Please drop me a note if you can identify the players in the photograph.
