THIS district once had many cycling clubs and Gourock reader Dr James Kelly and a friend are researching the history of these organisations.

They aim to produce a book with the working title "Grass Roots Cycling. A History of Inverclyde Cycling Clubs 1880-2000."

Chapters covering the period from 1880 to 1939 have been completed and Dr Kelly is keen to borrow photographs of clubs or groups of cyclists from these years.

He would especially welcome pictures of the following individual cycling club and district champions.

Years 1889-1890: W N Mackie and A McFarlane (Newark Bicycle Club) and D McIntosh (Octavia Bicycle Club).

Years 1900-1919: H Wood (Port Glasgow Cycling Club) and H Downie, (Abstainers Bicycle Club).

Years 1920-1939: R C Smith, A Crichton and R K McLeod (Greenock United Cycling Club), R Ross and A Thomson (Greenock Wheelers Cycling Club), S Telford and H T Traynor (Newark Road Club), J Shaw (Strathclyde Cycling Club), J McGinley (Newark Wheelers Cycling Club), W Lyle (Greenock Paragon Cycling Club) and G Murray (Royal Navy Torpedo Factory Cycling Club).

Photographs and the appropriate details should be sent to Dr James Kelly, 33 Tantallon Avenue, Gourock, PA19 1HA.

His email address is: Jameskelly1@talktalk.net
