THIS sporting picture from the past shows Greenock Wanderers First XV from the season 1908-1909.

It was loaned to me by Graham Peacock, of Kilmacolm, whose father Stanley can be seen third from the left in the back row.

Stanley"s family home was Ashgrove House in Gourock.

His father John C Peacock, a shipowner and shipbroker, was Provost of Gourock from 1901 to 1904. He was a founder member of Royal Gourock Yacht Club.

In the team photograph are, back row from left: W I Black, V Gossman, S Peacock, C J Hart, B M Cunningham, J D M Carmichael (president), A S Reid, N M Barclay, D Lawrie, C C Ramsay and J Galbreath (honorary secretary), Middle: J B Walker, J R Kerr, John Kerr (captain), W Lang and J W Hart. Front: W Fyfe and W Lindsay.

In addition to captaining what was then called Greenock Wanderers Football Club, John Kerr played cricket for Scotland.

The picture was taken at the Royal West of Scotland Amateur Boat Club at the west end of the Esplanade.

It can also be found in Dr John Forster"s book entitled "The First Hundred Years, Greenock Wanderers 1873-1973".
