Having arrived in Greenock on a cruise ship, I thought, ‘I’ll contact Alistair, he only lives few miles down the coast. ‘ Imagine my shock, when I read this obituary in the local paper.
I worked with Alistair at ICI Autocolor in the 1990’s He was a National Account Manager, and I was his line manager. As has all ready been said, he really was the ultimate professional. He would often phone me from his car phone on the way home, and when I answered he always said the same thing, ‘ What’s going on?’ I can hear him saying it even now.
I miss you Alistair…..

I only heard of Alistair's passing today. Alistair was one of the first people I ever met upon joining ICI in 1998. Within ICI, Alistair was one of the most respected professionals that I have ever had the pleasure to work with. As the Senior Account Manager for ICI's largest automotive accounts in Europe, Alistair never failed to make time to assist me as I grew into the business - selflessly setting my career on its trajectory to eventually becoming MD of the PPG UKIE refinish business (PPG acquiring this division of ICI a couple of years before Alistair retired).

Apart from the huge thanks that I and many colleagues owe Alistair personally, he also contributed hugely to the success that ICI & PPG achieved whilst he was working there. Alistair had an immense work ethic, was such a talented businessman and customers at all levels respected, trusted and loved the man.

As all who knew him won't need reminding, he was just great company too. Despite his job forcing him to work away from home lost during the week, he loved chatting about Lynette and his daughters. He never failed to have entertaining and knowledgeable contributions on any topic - from naval history to how the business used to run.

Along with many, many colleagues, I missed Alistair when he decided to retire and I am deeply upset to hear this news. To Lynette and family, please accept my sincerest condolences for having this great man taken from you too soon. I doubt that any of Alistair's old colleagues will ever forget him. RIP
