Dear Morag and family,
I want to say again how very sorry I am that you have lost your Patrick far too soon. I know I'm a stranger. Facebook, creates new types of relationships. Your home is over 6000km away, but it has allowed me to peep in on a family that celebrates the big moments and small moments with joy. Whether its a multi-generational meal with your mom, a holiday with the family, or a granddaughters school project, I've read comments that are full of pride and love on each occasion. And, from the photos, I've seen Patrick present on many of those occasions.
I thought about your family on Father's Day last week. I thought of how they lined the streets to honour a man and say good bye.
When my father was in his seventies he traveled back to Scotland to visit old acquaintances that he hadn't seen since he was in his early twenties. Gourock. It was the town my father arrived at in 1940. It was where he headed back to say hello again. But now I know something more of Gourock. I know it is a place made up of people that will but their business, pleasures and time aside to go stand on the street and wait for an old friend, wait for a good man, wait to support his family, wait to say good-bye. It is not everywhere that you find communities made of as fine a fabric as that. Nor is it every man that instills such an outpouring of respect and kindness. Your Patrick must have been a giant among men, Morag. A well respected good man. I pray that, with time, the good memories will help close the void. Or, if not close it, maybe brighten it a little.
Again, I am very, very sorry for your loss.
